Reflection
My advancements and professional development throughout my college career as a young adult have become more than I have ever imagined. Beginning with my employment history, I had a job since my first semester of college until my final semester. I believe that my ability to maintain a job and a high grade point average proves that I am organized and can handle a full schedule. Throughout the five years in undergrad I went from working at the gym, to one of the main dining services on campus, to one of the primary office assistants in the Feinstein Center for Service Learning. My experience working as a camp counselor, mentoring young girls with diabetes has helped me develop skills in connecting with others and encouraging others' ability to grow. Unlike my work experience, my volunteer experience developed later during my college experience. However, once I began my involvement in the community service department at the University of Rhode Island I quickly looked for more windows of opportunity to serve. The Feinstein Center for Service Learning introduced me to the chance to participate in alternative spring break trips. This past semester as a SFS Americorps peer mentor I worked closely with community partners working to strengthen the relationships between our Americorps members and the community partners. I was a key leader in this task given to me by my Americorps supervisor, My knowledge of the service community and the way non-profit organizations work will be useful for my full term as an Americorps member as well as pursuing my career in CSP. Along with my service experience, I believe my leadership experience is if not just as useful, more useful. Through opportunities within my sorority, my major and minors, and community service office I was able to broaden my professional development. My importance within each position gained a higher status each time I completed a task or advanced my skills.
My future goals will continue to reflect my experiences as a college undergraduate. Within the next year I will take my volunteer experience as a Scholarships for Service Americorps member and enroll in a full term or Americorps in one of three locations: Austin, Texas, Washington D.C, or Boston, Massachusetts. Throughout my volunteer experience I have had the opportunity to travel to places within the United States that I would not dream possible for me. Completing an alternative spring break trip in Austin, Texas opened my eyes to a possibility of volunteer opportunity in a completely new environment outside of the one I am used to. In Washington D.C I have the opportunity to participate in politics to an extent that I did not get the time to take as an undergraduate. Serving in Boston, Massachusetts would allow me the opportunity to begin to build a more steady pace of creating a home in the place where I hope to pursue my career. I will use my experience as a peer mentor for Americorps to help other new Americorps members become familiar with the program and its full advantages. It is clear that my volunteer experience will be a valuable tool while participating in a full term of Americorps. I believe it is also clear that my leadership background will prove my worthiness as a serving leader. Most leaderhsip experiences listed within my resume have been implemented to helping and guiding others. With my extensive background in leadership, mentoring, service, and professional development I believe that I will take full reign of my future goals. Following serving a full term of Americorps, I plan to apply to graduate programs in Boston, Massachusetts. I will be applying for a assistantship in College Student Personnel Programs. I believe CSP programs are leadership programs on a much broader scale. Working in CSP I will have the opportunity to work with young adults on personal and professional development, just as I have received throughout my college career.
